Single Session Therapy: What Is It and Could It Be What You Need?
Not everyone who reaches out for therapy is looking for a weekly, ongoing commitment. Sometimes what you need is space to think something through, get unstuck, or make sense of a specific issue, and you need it now, not in six weeks’ time. This is where Single Session Therapy can help.
What is Single Session Therapy?
Single Session Therapy is exactly what it sounds like: a single, focused session designed to help you work through a particular issue, decision or difficulty in one sitting, rather than over a series of weekly appointments. It isn’t a taster session or a watered-down version of ongoing therapy - it’s a complete, standalone piece of work in its own right. And is an approach which draws upon established research and practice in the field of Single Session Therapy.
I offer these sessions as a 90 minute appointment, priced at £85. The extended time (compared to a standard 50-minute session) means we’re not rushing. There is real space to explore what’s brought you to the session, work through it together, and leave with clarity, a plan, or simply some relief.
Who is it for?
Single Session Therapy tends to suit people who:
Have a specific issue, decision or life event they want to think through, rather than an ongoing pattern they want to explore over time
Want support quickly, without waiting for a weekly slot to become available
Are curious about therapy but aren’t ready to commit to an ongoing weekly arrangement
Have had therapy before and know how to use the space well, and want a one-off “check in” or space to work through something current
Simply prefer to work this way. Some people do their best thinking in a single, focused block of time rather than spread across many shorter sessions
It’s not necessarily the right fit if what you’re carrying feels rooted in long-standing patterns, past trauma, or something that’s likely to need sustained, regular support to work through safely. If that’s the case, we can talk about it in the session and consider what ongoing options might look like instead.
What happens in the session?
Before we begin, I’ll check that the Single Session Therapy feels like the right fit for you, and that you are happy to work in this focused way. We’ll use the 90 minutes to focus on the issue you bring, at a pace that suits you. Because Single Session Therapy is intentionally solution-focused, we’ll usually spend time getting a clear picture of what’s going on, what you’ve already tried, what you want to be different, and what a realistic next step looks like, so that you leave with something practical as well as emotional clarity.
As with all my work, this isn’t about me giving you advice or a quick fix.
It’s about working together so you can think more clearly, feel heard, and find your own solution to move forward.
How we find the focus
At the start of the session, we’ll agree together what we’re going to focus on. This might be a specific problem you want to work through, a solution you are hoping to find, or a goal you’d like to reach by the end of our time together. Getting really clear on this focus early on means we can use the 90 minutes well, rather than covering material not pertinent to our goal.
